Understanding the customer journey is key to effective marketing. Using Google Analytics 4 (GA4), we can segment users based on their stage within the 5A model (Aware → Appeal → Ask → Act → Advocate) and tailor our campaigns accordingly.

This post focuses on the crucial "Aware" stage: users who are new to your brand or have low brand recognition.

Defining the "Aware" Audience

These are users who:

  • Are new to your brand: They haven't visited your website/app in the last 30 days or have no prior interaction history.

  • Saw your ad but didn't click: They received an ad impression but didn't engage further.

The primary goal at this stage is to expand brand awareness and introduce your brand to potential customers.

GA4 Audience Building Method

Here’s how to create an "Aware" audience segment in GA4:

  1. Navigate to Audiences: In your GA4 Admin console, go to "Configure" → "Audiences" and click "New Audience."

  2. Select Custom Audience: Choose "Custom audience."

  3. Set Conditions:

    • Condition A: Trigger the first_visit event within the last 30 days (or check the user property "First Visit Time" within the last 30 days).

    • Exclusion (Optional): If you want to strictly target new users, you can add an exclusion condition for users with multiple visits or previous conversions.

  4. Save & Sync: Save the audience with a clear name. Ensure your GA4 property is linked to your Google Ads account. Once the audience accumulates users (this can take 24-48 hours), it will be available in Google Ads.

Campaign Types & Optimization Strategies

  • Campaign Types:

    • Brand Awareness campaigns (Display, Video ads like YouTube/OTT).

  • Optimization Strategies:

    • Focus on Reach and Frequency. Set frequency caps to avoid over-exposure.

    • Highlight your brand's core visuals and selling points to improve memorability.

    • Utilize multi-channel delivery (display, video, audio, social media) to increase brand visibility.

By segmenting and targeting users in the "Aware" stage, you lay the groundwork for future engagement and conversion.
